Sıfatların En Üstünlük Hali (Superlative Adjectives)

Önceki derste karşılaştırma sıfatlarını (Comparative Adjectives) öğrenerek iki şeyi birbiriyle kıyaslamayı gördün: bigger than, more interesting than gibi. Bu derste bir adım daha ileri gidiyoruz: bir grubun içindeki en üstün özelliği anlatacaksın. Örneğin "Türkiye'nin en büyük şehri" ya da "sınıftaki en zeki öğrenci" derken kullanacağın yapı bu. Bir sonraki derste ise Zarflar (Adverbs) konusuna geçerek bir eylemin nasıl yapıldığını anlatmayı öğreneceksin.

Kelimeler

Dil bilgisi / kalıp

En üstünlük hâli (Superlative), bir grup içindeki en üstün özelliği belirtir. Türkçedeki "en" kelimesine karşılık gelir: en büyük, en pahalı, en güzel. İngilizcede bu anlamı iki farklı yolla kurarız.

1) Kısa sıfatlar (tek heceli, bazı iki heceliler)

the + sıfat + -est

• tall → the tallest (en uzun)
• fast → the fastest (en hızlı)
• Sonu "e" ile bitenlere sadece -st eklenir: large → the largest (en büyük)
• Sonu "tek sesli harf + tek sessiz harf" ile biten kısa sıfatlarda son harf ikizlenir: big → the biggest (en büyük)
• Sonu "sessiz harf + y" ile bitenlerde y, i'ye döner: happy → the happiest (en mutlu)

2) Uzun sıfatlar (iki heceden fazla)

the most + sıfat

• beautiful → the most beautiful (en güzel)
• intelligent → the most intelligent (en zeki)

3) Düzensiz sıfatlar

Önemli fark: Türkçede sadece "en" kelimesini sıfatın önüne koyarız ("en büyük"), sıfatın kendisi değişmez. İngilizcede ise sıfatın sonuna -est eklenir veya önüne most gelir; ayrıca İngilizcede neredeyse her zaman başına the takısı eklenir. "the" unutulursa cümle eksik ve yanlış görünür.

Türklerin sık yaptığı hatalar

• Yanlış: "He is most tall in the class." → Doğru: "He is the tallest in the class." (Kısa sıfatlarda "most" değil, "-est" kullanılır; ayrıca "the" unutulmaz.)
• Yanlış: "This is more beautiful place." → Doğru: "This is the most beautiful place." (En üstünlük hâlinde "the" mutlaka gerekir, "more" değil "most" kullanılır.)
• Yanlış: "She is the goodest cook." → Doğru: "She is the best cook." ("good" düzensizdir, "-est" eki almaz.)
• Yanlış: "This is the most cheap hotel." → Doğru: "This is the cheapest hotel." ("cheap" kısa bir sıfattır, "most" ile değil "-est" ile kullanılır.)
• Yanlış: "He is the biggest in the world." (karşılaştırılan grup belirtilmeden bırakılırsa cümle eksik kalır) → Doğru: Mümkünse grup belirtilmeli: "He is the tallest man in his country." (Hangi grup içinde "en" olduğu net olmalı.)

Telaffuz ipucu

• -est eki genellikle "ıst" gibi telaffuz edilir: tallest → "tolıst", fastest → "fastıst".
• most kelimesi "mo-ust" değil, tek heceli "moust" gibi okunur; "o" sesi uzatılır.
• "the" kelimesi sesli harften önce "dhi" (İngilizce inceltilmiş d ile), sessiz harften önce "dhı" şeklinde okunur; örneğin "the est" değil "dhi ist" gibi bitişik söylenir.
